7 Ways to Get Out in Nature this Winter in Brisbane

Your Guide to Beating the Winter Blues in Brisbane

As the temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, it's easy to succumb to the allure of cozy blankets and endless Netflix binges. Afterall, us Queenslanders aren’t built for the bitter cold. But even in winter, Brisbane offers a wealth of opportunities to escape the hustle and bustle and reconnect with nature and it’s worth wearing an extra layer for. From invigorating (and yes freezing) ocean dips to tranquil cabin retreats, we've curated a list of the best ways to get out in nature this winter – all within a 3-hour drive of Brisbane. Grab your local GoGet and GoGet outta here.

Winter Swimming for Body and Soul

Who says swimming is just for summer? Brisbane's winter temperatures rarely dip below the mid-teens, making it surprisingly pleasant for a refreshing ocean swim. Yes really! Head to Cylinder Beach on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) or the sheltered waters of Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast. And if you’re wondering why you’d leave the comfort of a warm home for icy waters, winter swimming has been found to have a whole host of health benefits; from boosting circulation and strengthening the immune system to reducing stress. Once you get used to the cold, it’s also a fantastic natural high that really will leave you feeling invigorated.

GoGet Tip: Take a couple of thermos flasks with you. One with warm (but not boiling!) water to douse yourself with after the swim. And the second with some hot tea or coffee to warm you up.

Unplug and Unwind in a Tiny Cabin

Escape the digital world and embrace the simplicity of a tiny cabin getaway. Getting off grid is becoming increasingly popular and there are now more options to do this than ever. One of our favourites is Unyoked who offer secluded cabins nestled in gorgeous locations within a short drive of Brisbane. Like GoGet does with our cars, Unyoked give all their cabins a name. They provide the perfect setting to disconnect, recharge, and reconnect with nature. Spend your days hiking, reading, or simply soaking in the tranquility of your surroundings.

Hike to Hidden Waterfalls

Winter is the perfect time to explore Brisbane's lush rainforests and discover hidden waterfalls. The trails are less crowded, and the cooler temperatures make for a more comfortable hike. Head to Springbrook National Park for a breathtaking hike to Twin Falls or Purlingbrook Falls. Or, venture further afield to Tamborine National Park for a scenic walk to Curtis Falls. Camp Under the Stars

Embrace the crisp winter air and spend a night camping under the stars. There are plenty of campgrounds within a short drive of Brisbane, from the beachside campsites of Moreton Island to the secluded bush settings of D'Aguilar National Park. Gather around a campfire, roast marshmallows, and marvel at the starry night sky. Just make sure you choose the right camping gear - you’ll definitely want a thicker mat and warm sleeping bag for when the sun goes down.

Kayak or Canoe on Calm Waters

Winter's calm waters make it an ideal time for kayaking or canoeing. Paddle along the Brisbane River, explore the mangroves of Pumicestone Passage, or venture out to the crystal-clear waters of Lake Moogerah. Just don’t fall in!

Go Wildlife Spotting

Winter is a fantastic time for wildlife encounters around Brisbane. The cooler temperatures bring out a variety of animals that may be less active during the hot days of the summer months. Head to Lamington National Park to spot colourful parrots and lyrebirds, or visit the Daisy Hill Koala Centre for a chance to see these cuddly creatures up close. For a unique experience, take a whale-watching tour off the coast of Moreton Island to witness the majestic humpback whales on their annual migration. Picturesque Pedalling

It’s the perfect time of year for a leisurely bike ride. Explore Brisbane's scenic bike paths, like Brisbane Riverwalk, the Botanic Gardens, or the hidden gems of the Kedron Brook Bikeway. Pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it, enjoying the fresh air and your picturesque surroundings.
