Escape to Orange: Your Perfect June Long Weekend Getaway

Winter in Sydney has it’s charm, but let’s be real - a long weekend calls for a change of scenery. Enter Orange. At GoGet we know we have a soft spot for all things orange (those orange wing mirrors are a bit of a giveaway), but this charming town is a delightful escape whatever your colour palette. Known for its beautiful vineyards, historic buildings, and stunning countryside, Orange is the perfect destination for a long weekend getaway from Sydney this winter.

Take the Scenic Route

Orange is around 3.5 hours drive out of Sydney and there are a few different ways to get there - all of which take a similar amount of time. We recommend taking the scenic route via Kurrajong along the Bells Line of Road north of the blue mountains. Wind your way through Kurrajong Heights, where the air gets crisper and the views more and more expansive. Pull over in Bilpin, the NSW apple capital, for a cider tasting at Hillybilly cider, or an apple pie from the legendary Pie in the Sky (who have had a recent glow up). A little further along, the world-renowned Mount Tomah Botanic Gardens beckon. Meander your way through the stunning gardens before continuing on to Orange.

Visit the local wineries

Orange is known for its vineyards and wineries, so a visit to the vines is an absolute must. It has earned its reputation as a cool-climate wine region, producing exceptional drops that rival those of its European counterparts. Here, it's not just about the wine; it's about the stories, the passion, and the stunning landscapes that shape each bottle. Grab a designated driver or leave the GoGet at home and book a wine tour to make the most of your day out.

At De Salis Wines, elegance is the name of the game and their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are a testament to the region's unique terroir. The Lofty Pinot Noir and Wild Fume Blanc are particular GoGet faves. Take a seat on their sun-drenched terrace overlooking the vineyards, and savour the flavours of Orange in every sip. Visit at sunset for gorgeous views to accompany the gorgeous wines. They are also home to some adorable vineyard dogs (make sure to give them a pat from us).

Rowlee Wines, on the other hand, is all about character and quirk. From the cellar door in a rustic shed to the eclectic treasures that fill it. Make sure to sample their Single Vineyard Rieslings and Pinot Noirs. And don't miss their "Vine to Table" ATV Tour, Sensory Wine Experience and Lunch experience, where you can learn about the winemaking process while sampling the very best the vineyard has to offer.

For a taste of Orange's winemaking heritage with a modern twist, Swinging Bridge Wines is a must-visit. Located on the slopes of Mount Canobolas, this family-owned winery produces exceptional cool-climate wines, with a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnays. Their cellar door also offers stunning views, making it the perfect spot to relax and savour the flavours.

Visit Millthorpe

Millthorpe is a cahrming historic village just 20 minutes drive from Orange. It was established in the 19th century and still retains many of its original buildings and architecture, giving visitors a glimpse into its past. The village is a popular destination for foodies, with several award-winning restaurants and cafes serving up delicious local produce. Visit Tonic for dinner if you’re looking for an extraordinary dining experience. This hatted restaurant is known for its innovative cuisine that highlights the freshest seasonal ingredients. It's the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion or simply treat yourself to an incredible meal. They do a 5 course set menu which changes week to week so even if you’ve been before it’s worth going back again. And again. You will need to book in advance though as they get busy.

Millthorpe is also home to a number of boutique shops and galleries, making it a great place to pick up unique souvenirs and gifts. Don't miss the Millthorpe Markets, held on the first Sunday of every month, where you can browse handmade crafts, sample local food and wine, and enjoy live music.

A Culinary Adventure

Orange also has some incredible food closer to the town centre for you to indulge in. It has one of the NSW’s best food scenes with fantastic restaurants and cafes serving up delicious local cuisine. You can eat your way through a long weekend in Orange without even scratching the surface. Luckily it’s close enough to Sydney to return time and time again. From fine dining to casual eateries, Orange has plenty of options to choose from. Some of the GoGet team’s favourites include:

  • Byng Street: A fantastic breakfast spot serving memorable food and coffee. The lemon and ricotta pancakes are hard to look past.

  • Birdie Noshery & Drinking est: Serving a delicious lineup of food, craft beer, and cocktails.

  • Charred: A higher end dining experience offering set tasting menus for a fancy night out!

  • The Agrestic Grocer: A haven for food lovers, showcasing the region's finest produce, artisanal cheeses, and gourmet treats. Gather a selection of goodies and create a picnic feast to enjoy in Cook Park if it’s not too cold.

Explore the historic town centre

Orange has a rich history, and the town centre is home to many historic buildings and landmarks. Take a stroll through the tree-lined streets and admire the beautiful architecture. You can also check out the local farmers' market: The Orange Farmers Market is held every second Saturday and is a great place to buy fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and handmade crafts. You can also enjoy live music and grab a bite to eat from one of the food stalls.

Take a hike

Orange is surrounded by stunning countryside, perfect for a leisurely hike. The Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area is a popular spot for hiking, with trails of varying difficulty levels and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. If you’re especially lucky you might spot a wombat if you visit in the early morning or late afternoon. The Federal Falls Walk is a popular hiking trail that takes you through lush forest to a beautiful waterfall and the short Summits Walking Track offers gorgeous views of the area.

Orange in June

While Orange shines all through the year, June offers a unique charm. The landscape transforms into a winter wonderland, with frost-kissed vineyards and cozy fireplaces beckoning. It's the perfect time to indulge in hearty meals, warm up with a glass of local wine (or two), and embrace the slower pace of life. Be warned though - it’s colder than Sydney so pack warm.
