Solo in Sydney - The 10 Best Things To Do in Sydney Alone

Travelling solo in Sydney? Sydney is a great city for solo escapades - read on for the GoGet guide to our favourites.

Travellers from all over the world are drawn to Sydney, and why wouldn’t they be?! Sydney has it all - sun, sand and the most beautiful harbour in the world (we may be a bit biased but it really is).

But if you have no one to travel with - no sweat, arm yourself with a suitcase and a cheerful attituted and you’ll be fine. Here are our top tips for single travellers in Sydney.

Enjoy A Coastal Walk - Bondi to Coogee Beach

Two of Sydney’s best beaches, Bondi and Coogee (pronounced could-gee), are separated from one another by miles of pristine coastline and one of the best hikes you’ll ever do. If you are after breathtaking views, beautiful beaches to stop and swim at and great cafes to stop for a coffee or snack - then this is the walk for you. The entire route is pretty open, and you’ll get mobile coverage the whole way. The walk is at it’s most beautiful (and instagrammable) at sunrise, but it’s a great option for any time of the day or year. If you do fancy a swim along the way, make sure to stick to lifeguard patrolled swimming areas which are marked with yellow and red flags as there can be dangerous rip tides.

Dine At the Stunning Grounds Of Alexandria

The Grounds of Alexandria offers homemade drinks, mouthwatering pastries, and, of course, top notch coffee. It’s located inside a an old storage facility that’s been converted into a series of chic cafés and restaurants. The Grounds is a blend of a bygone era and roving flora enclosure. There’s no shortage of fantastic brunch options in Sydney, but this is up there with the very best of them. Both your stomach and instagram grid will thank you for a visit.

Stroll Through the Royal Botanical Gardens

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney really are magnificent and feature what are probably the best views of Sydney Harbour in the city. Dive into a wonderland of vibrant flowers, ancient trees and tranquil ponds right on the edge of the CBD, with sweeping views of the Opera House and harbour. Need a break from the urban hustle? pull up a picnic blanket and soak in the serenity. If you want to learn more about the history of the area, we recommend the Botanical Gardens' Aboriginal Heritage tour. Uncover the fascinating history of the land before Sydney city was built. Pro tip: Space on the tours fills up fast so register in advance to avoid missing out!

A Day at the Rocks

Imagine winding cobbled streets, whispers of convict curses clinging to the ancient sandstone. Welcome to The Rocks, Sydney's historical district where you're near guaranteed to find a ghost or two. Ditch the tour groups and get lost in this charming cobbled labyrinth – just don't blame me if you end up in a pub singing sea shanties with a salty old seadog (they have a surprisingly good rum punch). It’s pretty touristy - but hey, that’s for a very good reason. It's a bit like stepping back into a time capsule so why not wander the hidden alleyways adorned with street art, or hunt for treasure in antique shops. Feeling peckish? There’s a few overpiced tourist eateries but plenty of great options that locals love. Enjoy a meal with a view at the Glenmore rooftop, or, if you fancy getting a bit fancy, visit Le Foote. If you’re in the mood for a drink, make sure to visit the Doss House, a historic building that’s housed everything from boot makers to opium dealers over the years.

If you’re there over the weekend, make sure to check out the Rocks Market and if you’re looking for more markets to explore, check out our list of the 22 best markets in Sydney.

Visit The Opera House And Sydney Harbour Bridge

Sydney has always been centred around Circular Quay. Its U-shaped pier, which is only bordered on one side, is constantly bustling with thousands of people. The Quay has traditionally been home to several shops selling souvenirs and large restaurants. The Opera House Lounge is also a hidden gem for all travellers. Even though it is constantly crowded, the large and open Opera Bar is the ideal place to grab a drink and take in breathtaking views of the Harbour. Stroll around the Quay and admire the Opera House in all its glory, and if you’re not afraid of heights why not climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge for the ultimate view and experience! GoGet pro-tip: If you’re looking to save some money, skip the more expensive bridge climb and head to the top of the pylon.

See The Blue Mountains

Around a two-hour drive from Sydney, the Blue Mountains provide breath taking vistas, soaring cliffs, hidden tunnels, gorgeous gorges, and plenty of trees as far as the eye can see. It’s one of the best places for a hike in NSW, and a number of the walks are featured in our guide to the very best hikes in and around Sydney. If you’d rather avoid hiking on your own, you might want to think about taking a tour with a group. Numerous tour operators offer excursions tailored to different fitness levels, interests, and personality types. They can be a little touristy, but it’s worth it to experience one of the many fantastic hikes in the area.

Visit the Art Gallery of NSW

The Art Gallery of NSW is located on the edge of the Botanical Gardens. This exquisite structure has five levels, three of which are below ground, and is marked by four sets of tall columns. Each floor is covered with notable and distinctive works of art. Australian art, Aboriginal art, British Victorian art, contemporary pieces, photography, and countless more mediums are all represented in the gallery's collection. You could easily spend hours in this place just browsing the exhibits, savouring the artwork, and discovering interesting historical facts. Check out the gallery's superb on-site restaurant or laid-back cafe for a great place to eat lunch.

Shop In The Queen Victoria Building

Numerous well-known businesses including upscale eateries, boutiques, and tea shops can be found in the beautiful Queen Victoria Building (QVB). It’s worth a visit even if you aren’t an avid shopper. Imagine a cathedral of shopping, all stained-glass ceilings and ornate ironwork dripping with chandeliers. It's like stepping into a Victorian fairytale, minus the pesky fainting spells. You’ll find a blend of treny boutiques and Aussie fashion staples. If you’re looking to buy pre-loved, Newtown's King Street is the place to go for vintage record stores and thrift stores.

Ride the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus of Sydney

Joining a hop-on hop-off bus tour around Sydney is another of the best things to do alone in Sydney.

It’s a great way to get your bearings and see all the city’s hotspot. Plus you can learn a bit more about Sydney’s history as you go. The Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Chinese Gardens are just a couple of the stops along the way.

Explore Sydney via a Harbour Cruise

Solo visitors to Sydney can’t leave without a cruise on the harbour! It’s the sparkling jewel in Sydney's crown, but what’s the best way to experience it? Hop on a regular ferry – like a city bus on water – and nip across to Manly beach and back. You’ll pass right by the Opera House and the trip is aroud 45 minutes each way. Or if you’re craving a touch of luxury? Treat yourself to a harbour cruise! Sail past iconic landmarks like a VIP, indulging in fancy cocktails and panoramic views.
